What’s in a Myers’ Cocktail? The Ingredients, One by One

“Myers’ cocktail” is one of the most common names on an IV menu, in Long Beach and everywhere else. But the name doesn’t tell you what’s actually in the bag. Here is what a Myers’ cocktail is, what is in ours at K Wellness, and what to know before you choose one.

In short

  • A Myers’ cocktail is an IV blend of vitamins and minerals, named after Dr. John Myers.
  • It’s a recipe, not a brand. Formulas vary from clinic to clinic.
  • Ours contains B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, vitamin C and calcium. It’s $150 on our menu.
  • Tell us about any medications you take. Some can interact with the ingredients.

What is a Myers’ cocktail?

A Myers’ cocktail is a mix of vitamins and minerals given through an IV line. It’s named after the late Dr. John Myers. Dr. Alan Gaby later described a modified version, made of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and vitamin C (Gaby, 2002).

The MSD Manual describes the formula as high doses of B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium and calcium, along with hydroxocobalamin (a form of vitamin B12), pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and dexpanthenol (a form of vitamin B5), mixed with sterile water (MSD Manual, 2025).

There is no single official recipe. Each clinic makes its own version, so two drips with the same name can contain different things. If you want to know what’s in yours, ask.

What is in a Myers’ cocktail at K Wellness

At K Wellness, our Myers’ cocktail is a blend of B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, vitamin C and calcium. Here is what each of those is.

Ingredients in our Myers’ cocktail
Ingredient What it is
B vitamins A group of vitamins found in many foods.
Magnesium A mineral the body needs to stay healthy.
Zinc A mineral found in cells throughout the body. The body uses it to make DNA and proteins.
Vitamin C A water-soluble vitamin, also called ascorbic acid. In the body it acts as an antioxidant.
Calcium The most abundant mineral in the body. Almost all of it is stored in bones and teeth.

These descriptions come from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets on magnesium, zinc, vitamin C and calcium. They describe the nutrients themselves. They aren’t a description of what a drip does.

Adding something to it

On our menu, the Myers’ cocktail on its own is $150. Several drips start from it and add one more ingredient, each $175:

An extra vitamin can also be added to a drip for $30. You don’t need to decide before you come in. We go over the menu with you when you arrive. See every option and price on our IV menu.

What the research says

IV vitamin drips aren’t FDA-approved to treat or prevent any condition, and results and benefits are not guaranteed.

The MSD Manual’s 2025 review found insufficient scientific evidence for the benefits often claimed for IV vitamin therapy. (We cite Dr. Gaby’s 2002 paper above only for what goes into the formula.)

We think you should know that before you choose a drip. If you’re hoping a drip will help with a health problem, talk with your own doctor first.

Before your drip: tell us what you take

Some of these ingredients can interact with medications. The MSD Manual gives a few examples:

The same source notes that an infusion given too quickly can lower blood pressure and cause light-headedness, and that the safety of IV vitamin therapy during pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn’t been studied.

IV therapy isn’t right for everyone, and it isn’t a substitute for care from your own doctor. Before treatment, our medical assistant asks about your health conditions and anything you’re taking. Bring a list of your medications and supplements, and tell us about any allergies, a pregnancy or recent surgery. It isn’t a medical evaluation — if you’re unsure whether this is safe for you, ask your doctor first.
